The Rock Solid Master Clamp is an indispensable piece of gear designed to mount arms, monitors, lights, cords, backdrops and countless other types of gear to an array of round or flat surfaces; the possibilities are limitless. What many people don’t realize, is there is a little extra piece of gear stored on the Master Clamp called the Wedge.
As you can see in the animation above, the Wedge is stored behind the thumb screw on the back of the clamp. So when is the best time to use the Wedge?
Round Surfaces
When mounting the Master Clamp to a round surface, leave the Wedge where it is, and make sure the “V” part of the clamp securely wraps around the surface.
What you don’t want to do is use the Wedge on a round surface like this:
This setup greatly diminishes the Master Clamp’s ability to create a tight secure connection with the round surface. What ends up happening to compensate, is over-tightening; which could damage the clamp.
Flat Surfaces
When mounting to a flat surface make sure to use the Wedge like this:
This creates a nice flat surface on the Master Clamp and provides the best grip. While it is possible to get a rather secure looking connection without the Wedge, it actually provides less surface area on the clamp, meaning less friction on the flat surface you are mounting to. It also puts incredible tension on the back of the Master Clamp and the spring in the Master Clamp which can cause damage.
