Clay Cook will be one of four speakers for at Art & Advocacy: Using photography to Promote Positive Change (session number: MC04) on Thursday at 8 a.m. As a result of the current political climate, we’ve seen inspiring growth in grassroots activism around many environmental and social causes. What role can and should photographers play in fighting for these causes? What are the opportunities and pitfalls of using photography to advance an issue? What are the current trends in photojournalism and visual advocacy? These are just some of the questions that will be explored during this discussion on how photographers use their art for good. During this seminar you’ll hear from seasoned photographer-activists and learn best practices for how to use your art to advocate for good. Sue Bryce will be one of three speakers for Today’s Women in Photography and Film (session number: TK) on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. Sue Bryce, Barbara Davidson and Latoya Ruby Frasier will share their work and explain how they found the subjects that have ignited their commitment and passion. These visual storytellers will share the challenges of working in a male-dominated field, what’s inspired their creativity and drive, and the personal experiences that motivate their concern for the subjects they photograph. Sponsored by Canon, this panel will highlight career-defining images and new work by each of the photographers, and provide inspiration on making images that are both deeply personal and universally relevant. Peter Hurley will be presenting “The Power of the Portrait” (session number: TB3) on Thursday at 2 p.m. Peter Hurley has diligently worked at creating images that his clients are proud of for the last 17 years. He’ll teach you his simple but effective techniques to pull out an individual’s personality, while drawing from his personal experiences to show just how touching these crucial moments have been throughout his career. Join Hurley as he teaches you that a portrait you’ve taken should simply be a byproduct of the experience you had the opportunity to give someone. Lindsay Adler will be presenting Fashion & Beauty Photography Essentials (session number: TC1) on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. Lindsay Adler will introduce you to the exciting, fast-paced and creative world of fashion and beauty photography. This workshop is great for photographers looking to extend their knowledge and insights into this inspiring field. Adler will cover the most important elements including setting up an editorial shoot, core terminology, finding a creative team, basic marketing tips and more. The presentation will conclude with a demonstration of a few of Adler’s favorite beauty and fashion lighting techniques. day Seminar Joe McNally will be presenting Radio TTL Speedlights! New Tech, New Possibilities! (session number: MC06) on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. In this two-hour session, a whole new world of flash will be discussed, interpreted, explained and demonstrated by Joe McNally. Radio controlled TTL flashes are the current standard in Speedlights, and Joe explores and explains this new technology. A professional model will be present, and McNally will also pull subjects from the crowd. He will show examples of light and light theory, while engaging the audience in an ongoing Q&A and offering tips, tricks, stories and survival strategies derived from many years on location in over 60 countries and all fifty states. Jeremy Cowart will be presenting “Re-Discovering Yourself After Career Burnout” (session number: FA3) on Friday at 10:15 a.m. Celebrity photographer Jeremy Cowart will discuss his career—the highs, the lows and what he does when it comes time to reinvent himself. He’ll also discuss the importance of diversifying your income and interests in this super in-depth, honest look at what a photography career looks like in these changing times. Attendees will walk away inspired, with ideas on how to diversify their income. Brian Smith will be presenting Iconic Portrait Lighting (session number: FB2) on Friday at 2 p.m. Brian Smith will break down the lighting he’s used to create iconic portraits of Hollywood’s A-list and Fortune’s 600. Learn how to control the quality of light and how the choice between hard light and soft light allows you to control the mood. Learn which lighting modifiers he uses to control and shape light and shadow, to sculpt light in the studio and how to overcome harsh daylight by blending strobe with ambient light on location. You’ll learn how to work quickly under pressure, on both small and large productions to make everyone you photograph look and feel like a star. Karen Alsop will be presenting a Fantasy Photo Compositing – Live Studio Demonstration (session number: SA3) on Saturday at 10:15 a.m. Take your creativity to the next level with world class photographic compositor Karen Alsop. Using photographic principles and the power of Adobe Photoshop, Alsop will show you how to create a believable and magical photographic composite–from photographing the background to photographing and adding your subjects. Alsop will demonstrate green-screen photography in a live studio environment and will take you through the Photoshop steps in real time, finishing with an incredible work of art at the conclusion of the class. All attendees will receive a complimentary 3-month access to Story Art Education.
