The wait is over.
Tether Tools now offers USB-C to USB-C cables, and USB-A to USB-C cables for those using USB-C Cameras, such as Hasselblad H6 or X series, Panasonic GH5, Sony a7R III and other new cameras on the market. For photographers who have USB 2.0 and 3.0 cameras and have upgraded to USB-C computers, TetherPro USB-C to each existing camera port type will also be available. And to serve those who would like to simply extend an existing cable to a USB-C computer port, a 15-foot USB-C to USB-A adapter joins the TetherPro solutions line. TetherPro USB-C cables will be available in a variety of lengths up 15 feet with the option to add USB Extensions for increased length.
We’ve received a lot of interest, and a few questions of which we’ve compiled the four most common and answered them below.
Can’t I just use my dongle or adapter?
Yes, you can. There are risks of failure with two extra connection points, as well as the often-unreliable issues that can arise with an adapter. A TetherPro USB-C cable helps streamline your connection.
I have a camera that has a USB-C data port, what do I need to purchase?
It depends on your computer. If you’re using a computer that has a USB-C or lightning port like the new MacBook Pro laptops, you’ll want a USB-C to USB-C cable. If you have a standard USB-A port on your computer or laptop, you’ll want a USB-A to USB-C cable.
My camera doesn’t have a USB-C data port, when would I need a USB-C cable?
If you’re shooting tethered using a camera that has a USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 connection but shooting tethered to a computer, such as the MacBook Pro you’ll want to use a USB-C to USB-A cable. The recently updated ‘Search By Camera’ feature on TetherTools.com is a great resource for finding exactly what you need depending on your camera and computer.
I already own a TetherPro USB Cable but want to streamline my connection into a USB-C computer. Can I still use my old cable somehow?
Yes! If you already own a TetherPro USB Cable but now just want to ditch the dongle, we have you covered. We’ll be stocking 15-foot (4.6m) length USB-C to USB-A Female Adapter cables. Add it to your existing USB 2.0 or USB 2.0 tether cable and have an increased length in tethering distance.
Search By Camera Feature on Tether Tools Homepage
On TetherTools.com we recently updated our homepage to include a Select Camera Port to help photographers find the right cable they need for shooting tethered.
You’ll need to input three pieces of information, the manufacturer of your camera, the model, and the computer port on the laptop or desktop you plan on using.
In this hypothetical scenario, we’ve input the Nikon D800 and a USB-C port on our laptop.
You’ll see that it’s populated two options, our TetherPro USB-C to 3.0 Micro-B and TetherPro USB-C to 3.0 Micro-B Right Angle.
